Spring 2022

In my Introduction to CAD course, I was tasked with selecting a fashion brand and developing an original concept for a childrenswear line. I chose Vivienne Westwood, drawing inspiration from her distinct, rebellious style to create two collections: Vivienne’s Angels for Girls and Crazy Youngsters for Boys. The vision behind both collections was to stay true to Westwood’s iconic aesthetic by integrating her signature boldness, playfulness, and defiance of convention. I focused on silhouette, print, and color to reflect Westwood’s avant-garde spirit, ensuring each piece felt uniquely aligned with her brand's ethos.

Vivienne’s Angels features pleated skirts, oversized plaid patterns, and pops of punk-inspired colors like deep purples and rich reds. Each piece captures Westwood’s daring style but is adapted for younger wearers, balancing edginess with comfort. For Crazy Youngsters, I incorporated structured jackets, bold stripes, and relaxed fits, capturing a streetwear-inspired vibe. By adding unexpected details, like asymmetrical hems and vibrant graphic prints, I aimed to reflect Westwood’s playfully rebellious essence in a way that would inspire creativity and confidence in young wearers.

BOARD

Created using Adobe Photoshop

This mood board encapsulates the rebellious, avant-garde spirit of Vivienne Westwood, reinterpreted through the lens of childrenswear. The collage features bold tartan prints, exaggerated silhouettes, punk-inspired graphics, and historical influences, all signature elements of Westwood’s aesthetic. The rich reds, deep blues, and striking blacks, paired with playful illustrations and graffiti-like text, add a youthful, dynamic energy to the composition.

The inclusion of textured fabrics, corset-style details, and voluminous layering hints at the blend of historical costume references with contemporary punk elements, a hallmark of Westwood’s work. The heart-shaped bag, theatrical poses, and expressive brushstrokes reinforce a sense of whimsy and rebellion, making this concept board a compelling foundation for a childrenswear collection that embraces fearless self-expression and creativity

PRINT BOARDS

COLOR, FABRIC, &

The first board showcases Vivienne Westwood's iconic bold palette, heavily inspired by her punk and tartan influences. It features a vibrant array of hues, such as rich reds, deep purples, bright yellows, and classic tartan greens and oranges. These colors exude an unapologetic attitude while maintaining a sense of whimsy and youthfulness, perfect for a children's collection. The inclusion of specific Pantone colors anchors the palette, ensuring the hues maintain consistency throughout the design process.

The fabric board highlights an eclectic mix of textures and textiles that bring depth and drama to the designs. Key materials such as fur, tulle, denim, and cotton are emphasized, reflecting Westwood's love for contrasting materials and unconventional pairings. The board emphasizes the opulent feel of fur juxtaposed with the structured simplicity of denim, along with the softness and volume

volume of tulle. Layered images of models in striking runway pieces featuring these fabrics underscore their versatility and adaptability, making them suitable for both statement and everyday children's wear.

The print board focuses on the dynamic and timeless tartan patterns that are synonymous with Vivienne Westwood. It displays an array of plaid designs in varying scales and colors, ranging from traditional Scottish patterns to more abstract interpretations. These prints are layered with contemporary accents, like colorful checks and bold stripes, maintaining their punk-inspired roots while appealing to a younger audience. Styled imagery and fabric swatches provide a clear sense of how these prints can be adapted for creative and wearable children's garments.

I designed two unique prints for my children's wear collection. The first, "Firebird," is a bold, modern plaid with vibrant reds, purples, and oranges, reimagining the classic tartan through a youthful lens. The second, "Axiom," features a dynamic cosmic theme with graphic rocket ships and energetic starbursts on a charcoal background, blending curiosity and rebellion. Both prints incorporate a vivid color palette and strong geometric elements, staying true to Westwood’s ethos while adding a fun and adventurous twist for children.

The prints for the boys' collection, inspired by Vivienne Westwood, were designed to challenge traditional gender norms by incorporating "girlier" colors and eclectic elements. The "Criss-cross Applesauce" print is a modern take on classic plaid, featuring soft tones like Kindness pink, Baby Blue, Seafoam green, and Jupiter dark green. Its overlapping diagonal grids balance masculinity and femininity, embodying the collection’s theme of subversion. Complementing this, the "World Away" print introduces a cosmic-inspired design with geometric hexagons, striped linework, and orbital motifs on a dark green background called "Love is Here." With a vibrant palette including Mauve, Cyber Grape, and Banana yellow, this print pushes the experimental boundaries further, blending whimsy and structure. Together, these designs represent a bold reinterpretation of boys’ fashion, aligning with Vivienne Westwood’s avant-garde ethos.

WALL

Created using Adobe Photoshop

The window display for the Vivienne Westwood-inspired collection captures the essence of an art studio, blending creativity with bold fashion statements. Spray-painted Vivienne Westwood orbs adorn each side, framing the main logo, also spray-painted, in the center to create a striking focal point. Two boy mannequins and one girl mannequin showcase standout pieces from the collection, highlighting the balance of individuality and rebellion. Adding a playful yet practical touch, two cubicles designed to resemble children's toy boxes display accessories, including a bucket hat and sunglasses from the boys' line, as well as a purse and two beret hats from the girl's line. The overall setup exudes an avant-garde, artistic vibe that reflects the spirit of the collection.

The wall displays for the girls’ and boys’ collections showcases the versatility and vibrance of each line. The girls' collection (Wall 1) emphasizes opulence and elegance with a focus on luxurious silhouettes, such as fur ponchos and

ruffled ribbed skirts. Dominant shades include deep reds and neutral tones like Rich Sand and Walnut, arranged in a visually compelling layout to highlight layered textures and sophistication. A centerpiece display with ornate frames and floral accents ties the theme together.

For the boys' collection (Wall 2), the display focuses on combining bold prints with functional, structured silhouettes. The "Criss-cross Applesauce" and "World Away" prints are prominently featured in pieces such as cargo jackets and flowy drop-waist pants, utilizing colors like Kindness pink, Jupiter green, and Seafoam to create a dynamic and cohesive look. Accessories, including sunglasses and bucket hats, enhance the collection's urban and adventurous vibe. To improve the shopping experience, seating areas were incorporated, recognizing that boys are more likely to appreciate a place to sit while browsing. The overall presentation aligns with Vivienne Westwood's rebellious, avant-garde design philosophy, making a confident statement about individuality and style.
