Fashion Design Intern

Swakopmund, Namibia

June 2023 - August 2023

As a fashion design intern at Couture By Kim, I applied my pattern-making and design skills to support garment ideation and development. My role included assisting with sewing technologies and garment construction, managing the e-commerce site and inventory, and curating branded social media content that aligned with the store’s identity. I also had the privilege of working with traditional African textiles, including Odelela, Java wax, Shweshwe, and Springbok fur, which enriched my understanding of regional materials and techniques.

I designed this mood board to capture the essence of Namibia and infuse the collection with its authentic roots. It reflects the vibrant spirit of traditional dances, the rich cultural heritage of local tribes, and the striking landscapes that define the country’s geography. Each element was chosen to tell a story that connects to Namibia’s identity. Through this board, I aimed to inspire a piece in the collection that not only celebrates these cultural elements but also feels truly and authentically Namibian.

A Safari High-Waist Trouser, inspired by the brand’s aesthetic and the challenging Namibian climate. Designed to accommodate the region’s unpredictable temperatures, the trouser features a functional clip design, allowing it to be worn clipped up on both sides for warmer weather or clipped down when cooler. This piece was designed to be made using the brand’s signature Odelela fabric, which we hand-dyed ourselves—a meticulous process taking up to 36 hours—making each piece unique to the brand and embodying its commitment to authentic, handcrafted quality.

After completing the design for the trousers, I presented the garment to my boss. During the presentation, I explained the design in detail, providing specific measurements for key reference points, outlining the required materials, and walking through the planned production process. She approved the design, and we began the initial stages of production. Unfortunately, my internship ended before I had the chance to see the garment fully brought to life.

While working under the brand, I had the opportunity to contribute not only as a designer but also as a seamstress. I was deeply involved in patternmaking, cutting, and sewing for the Safari Collection, which was the brand's top seller. This collection was highly versatile, often being tailored or modified to suit specific events or client needs. Collaborating as part of the team, we would frequently go on fabric runs to source materials for these custom modifications, ensuring the designs aligned perfectly with the client's expectations. It was a dynamic role that allowed me to immerse myself in both the creative and technical sides of the brand.

WEBSITE

REBRAND

June 2023

During my internship at Couture By Kim, I redesigned the brand's website with a focus on simplicity and functionality, aligning with the owner’s vision for a clean and uncluttered look. She wanted the site to be straightforward and user-friendly, ensuring that clients could easily navigate and access information without distractions. I created a minimalistic design that highlights the brand’s products and services while maintaining a professional and polished appearance. After presenting the final design, she approved it, appreciating how it balanced simplicity with a sophisticated representation of the brand. While changes have been made to the website since my time there, the core structure and design I created remain intact, reflecting my original work and vision.
